The Reason Why FHTM reps Need a Great Elevator Speech
There are differing opinions on just what to say. The speech needs to be natural, not a string of tongue tied phrases but informative leaving the person wanting to know more. Look the person in the eyes. Be confident but not cocky. Smile. Say something memorable and sincere. Let your personality show through. Talking face to face is the most effective way of communicating who you are and what you do, take advantage of it. Avoid a straight out salesAn exchange of goods or services for currency or credit. A sales letter is a form of direct mail in which an advertiser sends a letter to a potential customer. pitch but make them want to learn more.
Elevator speech - Why is it called that? The time you have to talk to someone is short, even in a tall building. The name derives from the short time frame, usually about 30 seconds, not the location. Just those brief moments in which to answer that important question. Consider ending your speech with a question to engage the person in further conversation.
To be brief, concise and effective is not easy. Many experts think preparedness is the key, write down what you want to say. Eliminate business jargon, acronyms and unnecessary words. Don't bore or confuse your audience. Once you have created the speech you want, stand in front of the mirror and practice saying it out loud. Work at it until you have something that feels natural and you will remember to use when given the opportunity. Experts disagree on whether you should memorize your speech. Having a great elevator speech prepared is advisable, even if you are a natural at talking with people to stay on topic. Take the time to do some research. Look at what the experts' advice and at examples of what other people have used successfully.
